Dental Filling

What is a Dental Filling?

A dental filling is a restorative procedure used to repair cavities in teeth. Cavities, or caries, occur when bacteria in your mouth produce acids that erode the tooth enamel. If left untreated, these cavities can worsen, leading to tooth pain, infection, and even tooth loss.

Types of Dental Fillings

There are several types of dental fillings available

Composite: A tooth-colored filling made of a resin material that is hardened with a special light. Composite fillings are aesthetically pleasing and can be matched to the color of your natural teeth.

Dental Cement :- A tooth-colored filling made of glass ionomer that is aesthetically pleasing and can be matched to the color of your natural teeth.

The Filling Process

  1. Preparation: Your dentist will numb the area around the affected tooth with a local anesthetic. They will then remove the decayed portion of the tooth using a dental drill.
  2. Filling Placement: The dentist will place the filling material into the cavity and shape it to match the contours of your tooth.
  3. Hardening: For composite fillings, a special light is used to harden the material. Amalgam fillings do not require this step.
  4. Polishing: The dentist will polish the filling to ensure a smooth surface and prevent plaque buildup.

Caring for Your Fillings

To ensure the longevity of your fillings and prevent future cavities, it’s important to practice good oral hygiene:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss daily to remove food particles and plaque from between your teeth.
  • Visit your dentist for regular check-ups and cleanings.
  • Avoid sugary and acidic foods and drinks.
  • Quit smoking or avoid excessive alcohol consumption.

When to See a Dentist

If you experience any of the following symptoms, it’s important to see a dentist:

  • Toothache
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
  • Bad breath
  • Swelling in your cheek

By understanding the process and types of dental fillings, you can make informed decisions about your oral health and take steps to prevent cavities and maintain a beautiful smile.
